Nunavut is a vast northern territory with a small population, yet a robust economy whose growth rate exceeds the national average. Manitoba has a special relationship with Nunavut, and the Kivalliq region in particular. The re-opening of the Churchill rail line offers new opportunities to develop business opportunities for Manitoba companies. This seminar will offer a backgrounder and brief economic overview of Nunavut, provide a basic understanding of potential business opportunities in Nunavut from a Manitoba perspective, and identify some resources and references for entrepreneurs looking to pursue new business in the North.

Derek Earl is the Vice-President of the World Trade Centre Winnipeg, overseeing strategic initiatives, northern business development, Indigenous engagement, and international trade. A senior executive with over 15 years of experience in business and international trade, Derek has advised and assisted hundreds of companies with their international business development. He has been instrumental in numerous key projects, such as launching the WTC Winnipeg in 2013, organizing four editions of the global business forum Centrallia, and establishing Canada’s Trade Accelerator Program (TAP). He also oversees the WTC Winnipeg’s northern and Arctic trade development strategies, working with businesses, northern communities, and business networks across the Arctic market in North America and in Europe.
