Getting to Net Zero: Manitoba Business Leadership & Opportunities

This webinar will present a blend of what, why, who and how to get to net zero in business. What does it mean to achieve net zero carbon emissions? Why are businesses around the world (and in Canada and Manitoba) making this commitment? Why is this relevant, attractive and beneficial to businesses around the world and in particular to Manitoba businesses, and the Manitoba economy and society? Drawing on Manitoba’s Climate Change & Green Economy Action Plan, we will discuss the role and opportunities for businesses, including indigenous led companies, and clean tech innovators. We will look at case study examples and stories about Manitoba businesses that are Climate Smart Business Certified, and other businesses that are models of climate leadership. This webinar is geared towards businesses of all sizes in Manitoba, including SMEs and non-profits.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Becoming a climate leader. Observations from Climate Smart and other leading businesses. Here we will focus on examples of ways businesses can reduce their carbon footprint while also achieving co-benefits such as operating savings, productivity efficiencies, brand lift, and improved employee engagement.
2. Measuring and managing a business’ carbon footprint. We will outline the international protocol for GhG measurement that businesses around the world utilize, and explain the Climate Smart Certification process.
3. Getting your business to net zero. What exactly does it mean to be net zero, and how do businesses achieve this? We will discuss the hierarchy for GHG management which includes carbon reductions and offsetting, or insetting and direct investments.

Maureen is a sustainability expert who has worked with businesses, government and not for-profit organizations for two decades. Some career highlights include her work as Project Manager at Rocky Mountain Institute, a world-renowned ‘think tank’ on market-based solutions for sustainability; managing sustainability for HSBC Canada, and the Energy & Environment portfolio for Vancity, Canada’s largest Credit Union. Maureen has facilitated Climate Smart Business training for ten years guiding businesses learning to measure and manage their carbon footprint. She’s also designed and taught university and college courses, and presented on a variety of topics related to business climate leadership at events with attendees ranging from 50 to 500. She’s co-authored 3 books on environmental sustainability, and is most interested in teaching and learning about the intersection between business and environmental sustainability. Maureen holds an MBA and an undergraduate degree in Natural Resource and Environmental Management.
