Business Intelligence Analyst

Position summary

This individual works to improve WTC Winnipeg’s use of data. He or she helps to identify business challenges and results through data analytics to improve current operations and generate value.

Duties and responsibilities

Planning Support
  • In collaboration with the Director of Business Intelligence, determines the long-term strategic objectives regarding data use to achieve WTC Winnipeg’s objectives. Works with internal and external stakeholders to ensure commercial results are consistent with the data objectives
  • Supports the integration of project planning to general objectives and provides tactical expertise on implementing projects related to business intelligence
  • Helps others to see data as an asset by establishing basic principles of data governance to support the identification, collection and use of data
  • Discovers new trends and technologies to allow WTC Winnipeg to increase its value through data analytics
Solution Operations
  • Actively participates in projects and initiatives that aim to implement and maintain solutions related to data and business intelligence
  • Designs, codes, tests and documents business intelligence systems, applications and programs, whether new or updated versions, namely various integrations to and from centralized data storage solutions
  • Drafts and provides reports and insights based on available sources of data and makes them accessible to laypeople
  • Assists in the creation of databases and data warehouses to ensure interoperability with business intelligence solutions and supports the development of these solutions based on the emerging needs of businesses
  • Analyzes user needs and designs functional technical characteristics for front-end applications and business intelligence reports based on the conclusions of the analysis, then implements these solutions
  • Adheres to the definition of ETL (extract, transform, load) design directives to ensure a manageable ETL infrastructure for the business intelligence system
  • Develops and applies testing methods for solutions to ensure performance reliability and accuracy of results
  • Designs and provides training sessions and materials for users; provides technical assistance, as required
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by supervisors

Essential skills and competencies

  • College diploma or university degree in computer sciences, information sciences or computer engineering
  • Formal education or professional development in business intelligence or data analytics is an asset
  • Two to five years experience in a related field
  • Proficiency in both of Canada’s official languages is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic understanding of business intelligence tools and practical experience with data analytics, program indicators and performances
  • Demonstrates intermediate-level skills in developing scripts and SQL requests to extract and manipulate data from various sources
  • Basic understanding of .NET, Java and Python will be considered an important asset
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze users’ needs and create front-end business intelligence applications based on the chosen technical characteristics
  • Experience in data warehouse analysis and design; basic understanding of data warehousing methodologies and data modeling techniques
  • Experience with cloud-based data-analysis solutions through Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services will be considered an asset
  • Familiarity with ETL tools will be considered an asset
  • Experience in developing business intelligence visualizations with Tableau and/or Power BI
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy and professionalism
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances in a multi-tasking work environment
  • Time management skills and ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintains strong internal and external working relationships
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Hands-on experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software: will be considered an asset

Other information

  • Office work: Work takes place primarily at the head office in Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • May be required to work some evenings and weekends
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to various demands and priorities
  • Must be able to deal with frequent interruptions at work
  • May be required to work off-site for events in urban and rural communities
